I love reading and it is my hobby. There are many books that I read but my favorite book is – The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The book is written by John Byne and I enjoyed reading that book a lot. It was published in the year 2006 and it is about Bruno and his new friend. Bruno is nine years old and the book is set up during the world-war II, Berlin.
Bruno lives with his parents and he has an older sister who is 12 years old and she loves playing with dolls. Bruno’s father works with the army and he gets promoted and because of that, they are asked to shift to a different place called Out-With, which is placed near the Jews camp. Bruno has to leave his school and friends behind, which makes him really upset. Bruno does not like the new place where they are shifted and when his father asks him about the place he says nothing. There is the home tutor who comes and teaches Bruno and his sister Gretel.
Bruno does not like studying like this and he has no one to play with. One day he just steps out of the house and starts playing alone and goes a little far away from his house. Bruno then meets a young boy named Shmuel who is exactly his age and he thinks that he can be friends with him. But Shmuel lives on the other side of the fences and he wears the striped shirt and striped pajamas. Bruno does not understand him but he thinks that Shmuel can be his friend and they both can play together. Shumel on seeing Bruno says nothing at first but they start talking and they realize that they both the share the same birthday. They start talking and become good friends. Bruno has no idea about Shumel’s life and the life that is on the other side of the fence.
Bruno starts visiting him every day and he also starts sneaking in food with him so that he can share it with Bruno but while reaching the place Bruno ends up eating half of the things he sneaked. Shmuel’s expectation goes down and he just eats whatever Bruno offers him. Shumel gets skinny every passing day and Bruno does not know that he is living in a death camp. Bruno one day plans to sneak into the camp to find his father and ends up in the gas chamber.
I love this book as it shows the friendship between two people and I also love my friends blindly and can do anything for them. I have no clue about World-War II but my father explained it to me and I ended up in tears because I did not understand much about it. I have read the book so many times and now whenever I read, I just cry. It is a lovely book and it also helped me in learning about the World War II. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas will always remain my favorite book.
